St. Benedict’s College in Kandy, celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 30th April 2015 with great pomp and pageantry. Both the Tamil and Sinhala customs and traditions were observed to the letter.
Ven. Dr. EtipolaMangalaThero of the Dalugola Buddhist Temple in Ampitiya and Swami Krishnamoorthi of the Hindu Temple in Thalathuoya graced the function. In his Address, the Ven. Thero stressed the need to go beyond ones cultures, customs and traditions to unite as one human community in Sri Lanka. He said that petty differences have caused the division in our country. He further said that he is grateful to the Sylvestro-Benedictine Fathers at St. Anthony’s College Kandy who formed him in a Christian milieu which helped him to understand the society, unite with all and make him choosethe Buddhist Religious life. He did not forget to praise Rev. Fr. Clement Gnanapragasam OSB, the Rector of the College for organizing such a function to promote unity amongst all religions and cultures.
Our Rector, Rev. Fr. Clement Gnanapragasam OSB, in his address, spoke on the idea of forming an inter-cultural society in Sri Lanka. After observing all the customary rituals, the guests and students were severed the traditional sweet-meats and favorites
Following the cultural ceremony, the traditional New Year games got underway with the participation of all the students from the respective grades. All students were clad in sarong and shirt. The staff too were dressed in their traditional New Year attire. The celebrations were organized for the 3rd time by the class teachers and parents of grades one, two and three.
