St. Benedict’s English Medium College in Kandy was started in the year 2007. It was started with the intention of serving the underprivileged children in and around Kandy. Rt. Rev. Dr. Cletus C. Perera OSB the Bishop of the Diocese of Ratnapura who was also one of the former Major Superiors of the Sylvestro Benedictine Congregation in Sri Lanka served as its founder and the first Manager of SBCK.
He developed the College in very many ways and he is the one who laid a solid foundation to the school. The College was situated in the Weerakoon Gardens in Katugastota while Bishop Cletus was the Manager. After a couple of years he was elevated to the Office of a Bishop to the Diocese of Ratnapura and eventually a new Prior Major by the nameVery Rev. Fr. Leonard Ranasinghe OSB was appointed to the Congregation who became the second Manager of the College. He together with the other members of the Congregation decided to shift the school to a new location in Ampitiya area. He put up a new three storied building for the usage of the College.
The College grew up to the eighth grade in his time. After serving for five long years as the Manager in the year 2013 he had to leave this world to rest in the Lord His Creator. By that time he had rendered a yeoman service to the development of the College.May he rest in peace! Eventually after an Elective Chapter in the Priory of Sri Lanka Very Rev. Fr. ShamindraJayawarden OSB was elected as the new Prior Major of the Congregation. He began his services as the Manager of the College in the year 2014. He gave a new orientation to the College Administration and he has made systematic arrangements for the development of the College. He together with the Board of Governors of SBCK has planned a new six storied building for the usage of the College. Further he is laboring hard to register the College as a Government English Medium School. We are thankful to him for his tireless labours for the wellbeing of the College.
St. Benedict’s is a venture of the Sylvestro Benedictine Congregation in Sri Lanka. May SBCK grow day by day in the company of the Sylvestro Benedictine Monks.
